Tindari, an ancient Greco-Roman city founded in 396 BC by Dionysius of Syracuse, was a military fort occupied by the Carthaginians, conquered by the Romans and devastated by the Arabs in 836 AD The archaeological area includes a Greco-Roman theater, baths, Cyclopean walls and the Antiquarium with historical finds and marble statues.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Cathedral basilica of St. Bartholomew, the largest and oldest church in Patti, is located next to the Bishop's palace on a hill overlooking the city. Founded in 1094 by Count Ruggero d'altavilla, it has a central Gothic portal with columns and zoomorphic capitals. The ancient Sanctuary of Tindari, active during the Byzantine domination (535-836), hosted the simulacrum of the Brunette Virgin while in the East there was iconoclastic persecution. The sanctuary of the Madonna del Tindari, located on the top of the homonymous hill, dominates the Gulf of Patti. Opened in 1975, it incorporates a church of the third century partially destroyed by Turkish pirates in 1544. The venerated wooden statue of the Madonna, dating from between the eighth and first century, is represented as\u201dBasilissa\".
